Women’s Health

The providers at Platte River Medical Clinic are focused on care for the entire family. Building a relationship with our providers will contribute to the health and well-being of the whole family.

A yearly well woman exam is not only an important part of monitoring your overall health, but is also important for your reproductive health. This appointment is typically 30 minutes long.

What to Expect During a Well Woman Exam

The well woman exam includes aspects of an annual exam including:

  • Discussing your medical history and your family health history
  • Recording your vitals including height, weight, temperature, and blood pressure
  • Eating habits, physical activity, and any drug/alcohol use
  • Discussing your mental health
  • Any other topics you wish to discuss

Other aspects of the annual exam include a breast exam and discussion of your overall reproductive and sexual health. You’ll discuss your menstrual cycle as well.

Cervical Cancer Screening

A pap smear, or pap, is a screening tool for cervical cancer and it is recommended that women get their first pap starting at age 21. Your well woman exam may include a pap, but this is based on age and your own risk factors. The Mayo Clinic recommends women aged between 21 and 65 get a pap every three years. In some cases, women can get the screening every 5 years after the age of 30. Women who are considered high risk may need to have the screening done every year, so it is important to see your provider to understand what is best for you.

Keep in mind that if your pap comes back abnormal, or at the recommendation of your provider, you may need further testing. Dr. Tony Euser is trained to perform cryotherapy on the cervix.

Whether or not you are due for a pap, it is still recommended to get a yearly well woman exam. The other components of the exam are:

Physical Exam

Your provider will conduct a physical exam which includes a breast exam. With this exam the provider is checking for any abnormal lumps in the breast or underarm as well as puckering, dimpling, or bulging of the breasts. If you are aged 50 or older, it is recommended to partner your annual exam with a mammogram every 1 to 2 years.

A pelvic exam includes the pap smear, if needed, as well as an examination of your uterus and genitalia.

Birth Control, Sexual Health, and Family Planning

Your well woman exam is a great time to discuss your sexual health including testing for sexually transmitted diseases, if needed. You will discuss your menstrual cycle and birth control. Keep in mind that Dr. Tony Euser can perform IUD insertion and removal.

If you are thinking about starting a family, speak to your provider about any questions you may have about conception.

Why are Well Woman Exams Important?

Well woman exams are an important aspect of preventative health. This is your time to get screening for breast and gynecologic cancers as well as STD testing. You’ll discuss your menstrual cycle as well as family planning including birth control.
